I am sometimes asked what the best part of being a minister is. I can’t answer that question well because there isn’t a “best part” per se. I know people are curious about this strange vocation and calling that clergy of all sorts undertake, so I explain it this way. I usually say, “The most fun part is conducting weddings, because it is such a joyous day, and everybody expect for me is nervous.” I also say, “But the most fulfilling part is being with people in their final days and minutes, caring for them and their families.” This is also the most difficult part of ministry, just as the end of life is often the most difficult part of our lives. Even in the 21st century, we whisper about terminal illness and death; we avoid planning for the inevitable; we worry incessantly, and so on. Often we are unprepared for death, even when we know it is coming soon. I find that most people simply don’t know what to do either to prepare for the end of life, or when it happens to a loved one.

This is why, on Saturday, April 28th, from 9 am to 2 pm I am offering workshop about end of life decision making, titled “Faithful Choices.” We will talk about how to plan ahead (whether or not you expect to die soon); medical directives and other advance documents; ethical issues; values-based choices about treatment; what to do when death is imminent; what to do after someone dies, among other topics. I’ve offered this workshop multiple times over the years, and participants always find it useful. I hope you’ll join us.
